Digital
Elevation Model data allows Fugawi to determine the elevation of any
point on the map and generate elevation profiles of routes and tracks.
Version 3.1.2.548 or higher is required for support of all of the
formats listed below.
In
addition, Fugawi Global Navigator and Fugawi Marine ENC version
4.0.x or higher now also support Fugawi Elevation Library (.FEL)
format elevation and bathymetric files. FEL files are avaiable for
the entire world and are included as part of the Fugawi
Data Packs.
Shuttle
Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)
In
2000 the Space Shuttle Endeavor measured the elevation for the
world between 56 degrees south and 60 degrees north. Preliminary
data have been released with 3 arc second spacing (about 90 meters).
These data are supported by Fugawi beginning with version 3.1.2.548.
- Go
to http://srtm.usgs.gov/ for
information on downloading the data
- In
Fugawi, go to Forms|Elevation Library. Select the "HGT SRTM 3
second" option and click on the "+" key to add the new data to
your library. You will be prompted to supply the parent folder
where the data is contained.
The "Finished"
SRTM data is now available at http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation.html
USA
National Elevation Data (NED)
NOTE: This
format is supported in version 3.04.243 and later.
The NED data set with 30 meter spacing is available in BIL format
on the USGS web site. Instructions for downloading NED data (It
appears that Netscape does not work properly with the site. Use
Internet Explorer):
Worldwide
NIMA DTEDŽ Digital Terrain Elevation Data
The
US Department of Defense offers world-wide elevation data in DTED
format. The data is available in different resolutions, with Level
0 being the lowest level of resolution. Level 0 data is spaced at
30 seconds of latitude and longitude (about 900 meters, depending
on latitude). The Level 0 data is available over the internet for
civilians as follows:
- Go to
http://geoengine.nima.mil/geospatial/SW_TOOLS/NIMAMUSE/webinter/rast_roam.html/
- Click on
the map to zoom in to a reasonable-sized area (for example the
size of Germany).
- Click on
the Download/Order tab.
- In the DTED
section click on Download.
- Click on
Build File for Download
- When the
sceen says "Download Your Zip File" and "Your File is Ready",
click on the file name to download.
- Unzip the
zip file (see www.winzip.com
for a program to unzip the file). Place the unzipped files in
a new folder with a name that will help you identify the region.
Be sure there is no dmed. file, text folder, or dted folder already
in this destination folder. If any of these files/folders exist
in the destination folder, they will be overwritten and your DTEDŽ
software tools may not perform properly. Do not alter the folder
structure once the data have been unzipped.
- In Fugawi
go to Forms | Elevation Library
- Set the type
of file to DTED.
- Click on
the "+" button to add the new data to your elevation library.
