Question:
My AIS GPS receiver (or transceiver) outputs
the vessel’s GPS position as well as incoming AIS messages.
Can I use the AIS device to supply Fugawi with the vessel’s
position, as well as AIS information?
Solution:
Enable GPS|Settings|Use location information from AIS if
you want your own vessel's position to be determined from an AIS
receiver rather than from a conventional GPS receiver. Some AIS
receivers put out NMEA RMC messages and/or the VMO (own vessel position)
messages. These can be used to provide the position, speed and heading
for your vessel.
NOTE:
if you use the AIS for your position, you will not have any satellite
constellation data, which is ordinarily helpful in confirming the
quality of the GPS fix. Altitude will also be missing. If you enable
GPS|Settings|Use
location information from AIS
and you also have a conventional GPS receiver attached to Fugawi
or are receiving another GPS position via NMEA, then this position
will also be used by Fugawi. If there is a discrepancy between the
two positions, you may see the GPS icon jumping between these two
(or more) locations.
